On this day in 1919, Richard Oswald released “Different From the Others,” a film about a German man who was blackmailed for being gay at a time when homosexual acts between men were criminal under German law. Co-written by Magnus Hirschfeld, “Different From the Others” is believed to be the first pro-gay film in the world, starring Conrad Veidt and Reinhold Schünzel. Copies of the film were eventually seized and burned by the Nazis. Checkout our interview with activist and film historian Vito Russo where he discusses the significance of Different From the Others and the people who were willing to put their lives on the line for these ideas (https://bit.ly/MGH-Russo).
